The Attorney General’s Office is currently investigating a deadly car crash that took place on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, following a police chase from Newark to East Orange. One driver was fatally injured in the crash, while two others sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The names of those involved have not been disclosed.

The Bloomfield Police Department received a notification from an Automated License Plate Recognition system regarding a vehicle linked to a robbery investigation. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused and led them on a pursuit into East Orange, where the crash occurred. The driver of the pursued vehicle died, while other civilians involved suffered minor injuries. The police vehicles were not directly involved in the collisions.

The investigation is still ongoing, and no additional details are available at this time. A law from 2019 mandates that the Attorney General’s Office must investigate any deaths that occur during encounters with law enforcement officers or while in custody, with the findings presented to a grand jury for possible indictment of the officers involved.
