EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Despite dealing with already full kennels, a local nonprofit is taking in 13 dogs and 38 cats that were impacted by Hurricane Beryl in Texas earlier this month.

The Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RISPCA) says it was contacted by the SPCA of Brazoria County in Lake Jackson “with an urgent plea for help.”

The RISPCA says it does not normally take transports of dogs from out of state since its kennels are “constantly full” of local dogs in need of homes, but the organization made an exception in this case.

“Our staff recently visited that shelter. Lake Jackson is about 55 miles from Houston and, like Houston, has been severely impacted by Hurricane Beryl,” the RISPCA wrote in a press release.

The animals arrived at the RISPCA’s East Providence shelter on Thursday and are being primarily taken care of by the Humane Emergency Animal Response team of volunteers.

The dogs, cats and kittens will likely be available for adoption by the end of July.
