ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – Multiple local police agencies were called to the East Rochester carnival Saturday night due to fights that broke out.
According to officers a series of altercations involving more than 200 people broke out around the event at around 10 p.m. Additional officers were called in from surrounding agencies to support the East Rochester Police in controlling and dispersing the crowd.
Officers were able to break up the fights as the crowd was directed to the nearby Piano Works Plaza. Officers say in an effort to facilitate a safe and orderly dispersal, RTS buses were brought in to provide transportation. Despite this effort, most of the people declined to use the buses and chose to remain in the area until picked up by private vehicles.
According to ERPD, a 17-year-old boy was apprehended while attempting to enter the carnival at the single point of entry earlier in the evening. Members of Patriot Protection Security along with police officers located a firearm in his possession. The teen was arrested, arraigned, and remanded to the Industry Residential Center for Juveniles. Security checks at the entry point resulted in the confiscation of two stun guns and several knives from other people.
Mayor John Alfieri released a public safety response following the incident:
“Public Safety has been and continues to be the number one priority for all residents, businesses and visitors to the Town/Village of East Rochester .
This past Saturday evening visitors to the East Rochester Fire Department Carnival disrupted the family fun event that is brought to the community annually for all to enjoy. This is the main fundraiser for a 100% volunteer Fire Department. The East Rochester Police Department responded in a prepared and professional manner, supported by the Monroe County Sherriff’s Office, New York State Police, Fairport Police Department and multiple private security companies. All of our preplanning measures that were put in place unfortunately needed to be used.
We thank all those who “Protect and Serve” with keeping our community safe. We will meet soon with appropriate stake holders to evaluate the future of the event as no decision has been made at this time.”
