Biggest standouts from first week of New York Giants training camp

The New York Giants have gotten through the first week of training camp at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford.

There have been plenty of takeaways from the first seven practices as the team ramps up the physicality with the preseason looming next week.

Even though the majority of practices have been without pads, there's still enough evidence to show who has been standing out.

Here's a look at the biggest standouts from the first week of Giants training camp:

RB Dante "Turbo" Miller

The undrafted free-agent rookie very well could be playing his way into a roster spot by the end of the preseason. He spent most of his collegiate career at Columbia (2018-2021) before transferring to South Carolina (2022). Eligibility issues made him ineligible for the draft, but the Giants may have gotten a steal.

Miller has shown continuous explosiveness as a receiving option, and he's in heavy consideration as a return option on special teams. Miller's reported 4.27 in the 40-yard dash has shown up constantly, and he's pushing second-year back Eric Gray for a roster spot.

WR Malik Nabers

Of course, the darling of the Giants draft class has been showing out during his first training camp. He's held up extremely well against the defense's top cornerback, Deonte Banks, especially in some impressive 1-on-1 drills.

Nabers and quarterback Daniel Jones are still working on their connection — evident by a handful of underthrown deep passes. However, Nabers has seemingly come through with a splash play at every practice thus far. The Giants may have a special receiver on their hands.

S Gervarrius Owens

This may not be a name Giants fans were expecting to come from the safety position. However, Owens deserves his flowers for a strong start to camp. With rookie Tyler Nubin nursing a calf injury for the majority of camp thus far (he returned Thursday), Owens has made the most of his opportunities.

The 24-year-old seventh-round pick by the Giants enters his second season looking to crack the roster. He's worked mostly with the third-team defense, but he's made a few interceptions to go along with a handful of pass breakups during camp. The safety depth chart is wide open so he's one to keep an eye on during the preseason.

RT Jermaine Eluemunor

The Giants have only been in pads for two of their seven practices so it's difficult to truly gauge the performances from the trenches. However, Eluemunor has looked like a viable option at right tackle with Evan Neal remaining on the PUP list.

The veteran was expected to be the starting left guard next to Andrew Thomas, but he started camp at right tackle with Neal unavailable. If things continue to trend the way they have, the Giants may need to make the decision to keep the veteran where he is.

CB Nick McCloud

For the first few practices, McCloud seemed to have the inside track for the starting nickel role in Shane Bowen's defense. However, then spent a few practices with the backup units before regaining some first-team reps during Tuesday's practice.

McCloud has some inside-outside versatility, and he's played well from the slot for the most part during the first week of camp. He will have some stiff competition from rookie Dru Phillips, who also has made some notable plays from the slot.
