PITTSBURGH (AP) — Rookie Paul Skenes lost for the first time in 12 career major league starts, giving up Alec Burleson’s tiebreaking single in the ninth inning that lifted the St. Louis Cardinals over the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1 on Tuesday night. Taking the mound for the first time...
Matt Carpenter sets record straight on misconstrued celebration
The St. Louis Cardinals cleared things up regarding a celebration their players have done. Teams have gotten into the habit of celebrating hits/extra-base hits with signals to their teammates in the dugout. The Cardinals are no exception. After Alec Burleson hit a home run in the Cardinals’ 6-2 win over...
Pirates Preview: Bucs, Cardinals Settle Big Series in Wednesday Rubber Match
The Pittsburgh Pirates had plenty of chances but could not capitalize in a 2-1 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night. Paul Skenes worked into the ninth inning for the first time in his career with another stellar start but the Pirates’ offense fell flat. Pittsburgh had the bases loaded twice and a man on second with nobody out but couldn’t push across a run in any of those three chances. Nick Gonzales was responsible for driving in the lone run with an eighth-inning single.

St. Louis slugger Alec Burleson singled in Michael Siani in the 9th inning to knock Skenes out of the game and deliver his first loss in seven decisions.
Pirates rookie Paul Skenes takes first MLB loss in 12 starts despite another stellar vs. Cardinals
Paul Skenes experienced an MLB first on Tuesday. It's hard to place the blame for Tuesday's outcome on the Pittsburgh Pirates' rookie sensation. But he was credited with the decision in the St. Louis Cardinals' 2-1 win over the Pirates Tuesday at PNC Park. The loss was the first for...

Cardinals Gold Glover Could Be 'More Expendable' Than Previously Thought
The St. Louis Cardinals will be buyers at this summer's trade deadline but that doesn't mean well-known names on the roster are safe from being dealt. With this year's tight and competitive market, the Cardinals might have to trade away a position player or two and be willing to part ways with a decent haul of prospects to land what they need.
Pirates Bats Falter in Loss to Cardinals
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Pirates got a great performance from rookie starter Paul Skenes, but failed to support him, losing 2-1 to the St. Louis Cardinals Tuesday night at PNC Park. The Pirates (51-50) have dropped two out of their past three games, after winning six in a row, but...

Cardinals training camp battles: Defensive line
Along with cornerback, reconfiguring the defensive line makeup was high on the priority list for general manager Monti Ossenfort and Co. For as good as the Cardinals were running the rock in 2023, it was the complete opposite trying to defend it. Arizona was dead last in the league against the run last year, allowing 143.2 yards per game. It came in 28th for touchdowns given up with 19.

Willson Contreras Mistakenly Throwing Special Ball Into Stands Led to Trade With Fan
St. Louis Cardinals catcher Willson Contreras accidentally threw Lance Lynn's strikeout milestone ball into the stands, then had to barter with a fan to get the baseball back. St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Lance Lynn became the 89th pitcher in MLB history—and the sixth active pitcher—to reach the 2,000-strikeout milestone during Tuesday's 2-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park, but he almost didn't get the historic baseball back.
