EASTAMPTON, NJ — The Burlington County Parks System will be holding a unique three-part workshop centered on Crankie Theater beginning this weekend.

Crankie Theaters are pre-cinematic storytelling devices in which a long, illustrated scroll is wound onto two spools, which are then loaded into a box with a viewing window. The scroll is then hand-cranked while the story is told, a song is sung or a tune is played.

The Parks System's three-party DIY Crankie Theater Workshop is being held on three Sundays — July 21, July 28 and August 4 — from 1PM to 3PM at the Mansion Annex and Gallery at Historic Smithville Park, located at 803 Smithville Road in Eastampton.

In the first class on July 21, attendees will learn about crankies, see some examples and then assembly their own mini wooden crankie box with mini scroll.

In the second class, all who are interested in making and potentially performing a short story crankie or song at the upcoming Arts After Dark Crankie Festival on September 28 will workshop story boarding and illustration methods in detail, and start creating their own large scroll that can fit into a provided large-scale crankie box.

The third and final class will guide returning participants through finishing touches of their scrolls as well as provide performance support and further information on how to submit their crankie story to be performed at the Crankie Festival at Arts After Dark.
