Eastham woman scratches million-dollar lottery winner

Twelve proved a lucky number for Eastham resident Barbara Fay: Because her son was born in December, the 12th month of the year, she chose a lottery scratch ticket from the number 12 dispenser at Cumberland Farms .

Fay won $1 million on the Massachusetts State Lottery’s “Emeralds 50X” instant ticket game and claimed the prize July 16. Only one of the seven $1 million prizes in that game remain. Chances of winning $1 million were one in 2.3 million. Emeralds 50X also offered three $4M instant prizes but those have all been redeemed, according to the state lottery website.

Fay chose to take her winnings as a one-time payment of $650,000 (before taxes) rather than receiving $50,000/year for 20 years.

“She plans on purchasing a new car and helping out her mother with the winnings,” according to a statement from the Massachusetts State Lottery.

Fay did not answer a message requesting comment, sent to her via her Facebook profile, which says she is a “Waitress/Bartender/Hostess at Orleans/Eastham Elks Lodge #2572.”

No one answered the phone at the members-only, not-for-profit Lodge that does open for public rentals.

Fay bought the ticket at Cumberland Farms, 4460 State Highway (Route 6) in Eastham. The store receives a $10,000 bonus for its sale of the ticket.
