Beloit Sky Carp beat Lake County Captains in extra innings

EASTLAKE, Ohio — Beloit Sky Carp reliever Evan Taylor’s fourth win of the season also may have been his most clutch.

With the bases full and the Sky Carp ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the 10th, Taylor got Lake County Captains’ second baseman Jake Fox to smack a harmless fly ball into left that outfielder Dalvy Rosario secured to slam the door on Beloit’s victory on Thursday night.

The win moved Taylor’s record to 4-4, and it cut the Captains’ lead in the six-game series down to 2-1 after Lake County swept a doubleheader on Wednesday.

With Isaiah Greene on second as the automatic runner, Taylor got Jonah Advincula to fly out before walking Cooper Ingle. Jorge Burgos’ groundout moved the runners to second and third, and Miack Collado was intentionally walked to load the bags but the lefty got the final out just two pitches later.

Tied at two after nine innings, the Sky Carp jumped ahead in the top of the 10th as Cameron Barstad’s single into left moved automatic runner Rosario to third. Brett Roberts then hit a chopper to shortstop Jose Devers, whose throw home was too late as Rosario safely slid in before the tag.

A wild pitch moved both runners up a base before Captains’ reliever Allan Hernandez got three-straight outs to limit the damage.

The Sky Carp had taken a 1-0 lead off starter Dylan DeLucia in the first off Brock Vradenburg’s RBI single but the Captains struck on Beloit starter Thomas White immediately, as well with Collado’s one-run single.

Dalvy Rosario led off the top of the second with a solo homer to left field, and from there the game quickly turned into a pitching duel with neither team scoring until the ninth.

White finished with five innings tossed and an earned run allowed on three hits and three walks with eight strikeouts. Josh Ekness threw two scoreless innings of relief with a hit and three strikeouts while Josh White threw a scoreless eighth.

For Lake County, DeLucia finished after 4 2-3 innings as he allowed two earned runs on three hits with five strikeouts. Zach Jacobs didn’t allow a hit and struck out four in 3 1-3 dominant innings out of the bullpen while Hernandez threw a scoreless ninth.

White came back out for the ninth for the Sky Carp and started by hitting Devers with a pitch. Tyresse Turner singled and Esteban Gonazlez whacked a double into right. Devers scored easily but Turner was thrown out on a relay throw from Roberts to second baseman Wilfredo Lara to home.

Taylor entered and caught Gonazlez trying to swipe third before striking out Greene to force extra innings.

Beloit won despite being outhit 7-4, with Burgos and Turner each having two for Lake County.

The two squads continue the series on Friday at 6 p.m.
