Serving Up the Sunny Side of Life: Sunny’s Backyard
Vegan Pub Food That Even Seasoned Carnivores Will Crave!. Words by Jessi Devenyns Photos by Baptiste Despois. The words “pub food” makes mouths water, regardless of dietary preference. There is just something about a table of friends, cold drinks, good conversation, and comforting food that is alluring to even the most conscientious diner. And it is at this intersection of plant-based pub food that the menu at Sunny’s Backyard shines.
Top Three Cities in the U.S. for Music Lovers
Austin isn’t the only music game around. There are plenty of places across the nation to experience talent from big names to up-and-comers. These three cities are considered the fundamentals for music in the United States, viewed as drivers of the industry and the future source for big talent. You can catch a show seven days a week, afternoons or evenings, covering most genres in any one of these destinations.
Best Restaurants: Gabriela’s Downtown Delivers Sensory Overload
Words by Jessi Devenyns Photos by Brittany Dawn Short. In 2018, when Gabby Bucio first began hunting for the perfect space for Gabriela’s Downtown – the original location of her soon-to-become hospitality empire – she kept passing over a house on the hill. “It was painted black, and it wasn’t well-kept, so I kept ignoring it,” she remembers. Then one day, she and her brother, Arturo Bucio, “skipped the fence, and we saw the view and fell in love with it.”
Best Restaurants: Hillside Farmacy is an Eastside Classic
Words by Jessi Devenyns Photos by Baptiste Despois. Hillside Farmacy’s shaded windows look out onto East 11th Street where passersby amble along the sidewalk, occasionally glancing into the historic interior of this neighborhood establishment. Many enter through the historic wooden double-doors that have swung on their hinges for generations.
Best Restaurants: Kemuri Tatsu-ya Brings Two Worlds Together
Words by Jessi Devenyns Photos by Baptiste Despois. The decor, the drinks, and the food all work hard to defy classification at Kemuri Tatsu-ya. A bricolage of horns and license plates collide with Japanese bar signs, alluding to a concept described by Director of Culinary Development, Clinton Kendall, as the “Texas roadhouse dive bar slash Japanese samurai movie.” Contrast this visual tidal wave with a thumping background of beats and a crescendo of chatter, and it’s apparent that this izakaya is fueled equally by food, drinks, and fun.
Best Restaurants: Home Slice Pizza for the Family
Words by Jessi Devenyns Photos by Baptiste Despois. Stepping into Home Slice on East 53rd Street has the feeling of walking into a traditional New York pizzeria, except that the familiar authenticity of red vinyl booths and checkered tablecloths is punctuated by graffiti art, an eclectic collection of artifacts, and ‘80s rock references. But rather than overwhelming, the result is playfully irreverent.
Best Restaurants: Always Lavish Lutie’s
Words by Jessi Devenyns Photos by Baptiste Despois. Luscious is how one could sum up a dining experience at Lutie’s. From the atmosphere to the service to the food, this small space, filled with sumptuous banquettes, vibrant color, clinking glasses, and heady kitchen scents, is in a league of its own.
An Architectural Love Letter to Artists
Words by Deven Wilson Photos Courtesy of Leftway Studios. “We’re all about artists first,” Katie Harrington, Leftway Studios co-owner, muses looking over the property from their treetop patio. Fabricated grassy knolls and repurposed tree stumps populate the yard, alien to the typical flat tracts found in the Cesar Chavez neighborhood.

A Guide to the Best East Austin Skate Parks
Words by Abby L. Johnson Photos by Baptiste Despois. It can be extremely annoying to see a beautifully paved, empty lot ripe for skating only to find one of those authoritative signs declaring the unused space off-limits. While we all like to bend the rules occasionally, Austin has plenty of designated skate spots for those days.

Sounds Like Home: Superfónicos
Words by Abby L. Johnson Photos by Baptiste Despois. By bringing the sounds of the Caribbean to Texas, Superfónicos creates community and connection wherever they play. Garland, Texas, native Nico Sanchez had his musical start in the fifth grade when he picked up the cello. He wanted to play the upright bass but was deemed ‘too short.’ His disappointment was short-lived, as soon after that his parents bought him an electric bass starter kit, and he’s been growing musically ever since.

This year, there’s no need to leave the taste buds disappointed with these decadent and local chocolates.

Anything anybody wants to play started with blues.”

On the corner of East 20th and Salina streets sits a squat brick building in a dusty orange hue common of the early 20th century.
