Funny Business {ColdTowne Theater}
World-class barbecue, legendary live music scene, and general weirdness. Austin is known for all of these, and improv comedy is joining the list of the city’s most notable characteristics with ColdTowne Theater adding to East Austin’s clever creativity in its new Eastside location. For 15 years, ColdTowne Theater,...
Rising Action [Nicole Blair Architect]
A lofty addition takes flight over an existing bungalow for an East Austin couple seeking studio space without sacrificing their yard and luscious gardens. “We knew it was going to be complicated, but we knew we had to do it,” beams Dylan Robertson, remembering the first moment he and his wife, Annie Cobb, saw their home addition visualized. “The renderings just spoke to us.”
Whet Your Whistle {at Whisler’s}

The World is a Stage {City Theatre}
City Theatre brings art and community to its new East Austin venue. A dog barks from stage right. The sounds of a party bubble off stage left. Suddenly, the cast appears, and the room fills with a cacophony of voices. And the show begins. At City Theatre, actors wield wit,...
Leaving Tastebuds Speechless [Mum Foods]
Using the tasty lens of his heritage and summers spent sampling smoked meats in delis across Queens, Geoff Ellis is blazing a new path for barbecue in East Austin. Initially, Geoff, owner of Mum Foods, was set on being a fine dining chef. However, as a student at Texas State, he found success in smoking meats and baking breads for farmers’ markets around town. “I couldn’t believe that in the barbecue capital of the world, nobody sells meat by the pound at farmers’ markets,” Geoff explains.
The Hana Highway
There’s no better time than the present to visit Maui. Arguably one of the most epic adventures, and definitely the best drive in the Hawaiian islands, Highway to Hana is about the journey, not the destination. First things first, rent a convertible, and then hit the road in a bikini top and flip-flops. From bamboo and eucalyptus forests to gushing waterfalls to multi-colored beaches and dramatic cliffs, this drive is full of surprises.
The Dream Shop {Marcela Homrich}
Vivid imagery, a medley of textures, and a dash of whimsical all contribute to the meticulous mise-en-place of artist Marcela Homrich’s storefront. The varied array of colorful tapestries, multi-media collages, embroidery, jewelry, and paper goods are artfully arranged in her cozy gift shop located in the heart of East Austin, fully entertaining but not overwhelming the senses.

Love Where You Live – Serving up Local Spirit
Many years ago, a quaint building at the corner of East 11th Street and Rosewood Avenue caught the eye of local restaurateurs Jade Pace-Matthews and Greg Matthews. To their chagrin, the space was already being courted as a sports bar. But when providence intervened and the liquor application disappeared from the window, the couple quickly dialed up the owners.
Love Where You Live – Saltillo Rises
On the Bones of Austin’s Industrial Past. Words by Chris Ferguson & Janine Stankus| Photos by Eric Morales & Baptiste Despois. In the early 1900s, the six-block stretch between 4th and 5th streets, just east of I-35, became an industrial shipping hub that ignited Austin’s economic growth. Today, the last-standing remnants of the city’s first rail yard have been transformed into a new gathering space that reflects that growth and respects its history.
Love Where You Live – Mulling Mueller
Decades after going all-in on new urbanism, East Austin’s largest planned neighborhood has finally landed. In May 1961, Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson was in town to visit Austin Mayor Lester Palmer to officially unveil a soaring new terminal and control tower at Robert Mueller Municipal Airport, which had originally opened in 1930 and provided the town’s first commercial runways.
