One for the Books: Austin’s Public Libraries
East Austin’s Public Libraries Go Far Beyond the Dewey Decimal System. For those of us who grew up as self-proclaimed bookworms, nothing was more thrilling than walking into a quiet, mellow library with a library card in hand. Tiptoeing through the endless aisles and skimming through the various titles until that one perfect book popped out was so gratifying. For those less inclined to the literary arts, the sometimes overly serious environment was downright dreadful. As adults with increasingly less time to read for leisure, we may not realize that libraries provide much more than novels and reference books.

These are SparkNotes. They are skeletal, we admit that, but they are going to get you through the test. Did we mention there will be a test? Study up!

Preserving the Little Blue House
Words by Abby L. Johnson Photos by Ashley Haguewood. What happens when a family outgrows their dream home?. That was a question the Bowling family had to answer for themselves when they suddenly realized that the 1000 square-foot home they lovingly renovated and restored was simply too small. With two growing kids, the house they moved into in 2008 no longer suited their needs. But the idea of selling in a rapidly changing neighborhood was a bit unsavory. “When we first moved in, neighbors, delighted that we were not tearing it down, brought us agaves and cookies and all kinds of things,” homeowner Ashley recalls fondly. “That kind of stuck with us. It has been important to us to maintain the integrity of the house— not only because we love it but also because we love our neighbors.”
