Although iconic Austin karaoke bar Ego’s was potentially going to have to close in mid-August due to pipe damages and impending development construction, the Bouldin Creek bar is now safe, staying open for as long as possible at 510 South Congress Avenue. In early August, the Ego’s team thought they had to potentially close the bar because the pipes were very damaged — the Instagram post describes “pipes that keep collapsing.” Since the South Congress building is going to be demolished for an upcoming development, they weren’t sure if the landlord would invest to fix the issue. However, after a conversation with the landlord on August 5, manager Laura J. Kosmerl tells Eater that the landlord is sending a plumber to help fix those pipes so that the bar can stay open for now, through at least the end of the month. Ego’s remained open for service during most of August while dealing with its plumbing issues. Those finally got fixed — the plumbing line got fixed and was approved by the city inspector — as of August 27. This means the bar will stay open for as long as it can, per Kosmerl over Instagram direct message. Eventually, the South Congress address is being turned into a massive mixed-use development project by New York City-based business Related Companies. The future project will include multiple high-rise buildings full of apartments, hotels, offices, retail, a grocery store, and restaurants/bars, as reported by Austin Business Journal. The plan is to also reopen Ego’s somewhere in the space, as reported by The Towers. But in the meantime, Ego’s won’t temporarily reopen elsewhere during that time. Ego’s opened in 1979, becoming known for its eclectic hidden space (the entrance is through the parking garage); affordable cocktails, beers, and shots; and fantastically fun space for karaoke, plus, it’s where Texas politicians blow off steam through karaoke.This plan to relocate Ego’s in the replacement development is similar to what happened with the Container Bar on Rainey Street, run by Bridget Dunlap. The bar closed in 2022 and was demolished to make way for a still-in-construction condo building the Modern. However, the new development will include a new bar from Dunlap.
