GCPS teacher raises pending, city questions budget transparency
Greensville County public schools and the City of Emporia are once again going head-to-head over the budget for fiscal year 2025. The two-year state budget signed by Governor Glenn Youngkin in May included a 3% raise for all teachers across the commonwealth. However, localities are required to provide a local match in order to receive state funding for the raises, which only apply to Standards of Quality positions — teachers, principals and assistant principals.

Varina-Enon bridge lane to close for six months
Drivers who take the Varina Enon Bridge on I-295 will have to navigate with a reduced number of lanes for the next six months. The right lane on the southbound side of the bridge will close on Monday, July 22 for bridge maintenance and will remain closed for about half a year, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
