Police continue investigating after 3-year-old fatally struck by vehicle in Hamtramck
HAMTRAMCK, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) - Police in Hamtramck are investigating after a 3-year-old girl was fatally struck by a vehicle on Tuesday afternoon in Hamtramck.Police were called at about 3:06 p.m. to the area of Burger Street between Fleming and Mackay streets, where they found the child with her mother. The child, who was breathing but unresponsive, received medical attention until EMS arrived and was transported to Children's Hospital of Michigan.She was pronounced dead "after all life-saving measures were exhausted," according to a new release.Police said the driver has been identified and the investigation is ongoing.
Making homes safer for children: bed ministry now offering free gun locks in Monroe County
MONROE COUNTY — The Now I Lay Me Down bed ministry is helping to bring gun locks to Monroe County families. Eventually, the ministry also hopes to provide smoke detectors. The ministry, which began in 2001, provides a free bed and bed accessories to children in need ages 17 and younger. Recently, the ministry partnered with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office to also provide free gun locks to families. Public Act 17 of 2023, which went into effect earlier this year, requires secure storage of firearms in Michigan homes with minors.

Officials have cracked down on a human smuggling operation in Metro Detroit after agents witnessed a boat illegally crossing from Canada into the United States, resulting in the arrest of five individuals. On June 25, U.S. Border Patrol agents from the Marysville Station observed the vessel on the St. Clair River as it dropped off three passengers on the U.S. shoreline who then proceeded to quickly get into a waiting car.
