US Postal Service, mail delivery for Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples Day, Oct. 14, 2024

Columbus Day is somewhat of a controversial holiday. Many prefer to call it Indigenous People’s Day or Native Americans Day. Since Columbus was also Italian, Columbus Day was a source of pride for many Italian Americans who faced discrimination when they first immigrated in large numbers to the United States. The name of several Columbus Day parades and other events have taken out Columbus’s name and replaced it with “Italian Heritage.” Many formerly Columbus Day Parades have changed their names to Italian Heritage Day Parade.  

US Postal Service, mail delivery, post offices open or closed on Columbus Day, Oct. 14, 2024?

For most businesses, Oct. 14, 2024 is just another working day, but of course, not for most government workers.  And yes, the US Postal Service is among those agencies that honor the day as a holiday.

A postal holiday means that there will be no mail delivery on Monday, October 14, 2024.  Mail delivery will resume on Tuesday, October 15, 2024. Almost all post offices will be closed on Monday, October 14, 2024 and will reopen on Tuesday, October 15, 2024. If you leave an outgoing letter in a mailbox, unless it specifically says it will be picked up from the box on holidays, it won’t be picked up until Tuesday, October 15, 2024.
