High School Roundup: Aces softball, volleyball lose playoff runs

John A. Holmes’ softball and volleyball teams have been eliminated from the 2A NCHSSA state playoffs.

The Aces softball team lost to Ayden-Grifton Chargers 10-7 in extra innings Tuesday, May 7, in the 2A NCHSSA Softball State Championship playoffs.

Holmes scored runs in the first and fourth innings and followed that up with three in the fifth and single runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. Ayden-Grifton scored three in the third, one in the fourth, one in the sixth, two in the seventh and three in the eighth.

Chloe Chappell and Marley Harrell both homered for the Aces in the loss. Chappell had three hits, knocked in a run and scored three times. Harrell had two hits, knocked in three runs and scored twice.

Mia Hoffer also had two runs batted in. Ainsley Parrish and Ellie Spear each had a hit.

Chappell pitched eight innings, giving up 10 runs, only five of which were earned. She scattered 11 hits, walked three and struck out eight Charger hitters.

SoccerThe No. 21-ranked Holmes Aces soccer team was shutout Monday 5-0 by No. 11 Southwest Onslow Stallions in the 2A NCHSAA state women’s soccer playoffs.

That followed the Aces’ 8-0 shutout of No. 24-ranked Cape Hatteras Thursday, May 9, in a non-conference game for both clubs.

The Aces scored six goals in the first half and two in the second. Emma Parrish led the way with two goals and two assists. Ellie Spear also had two goals and one assist.

Kate Foster scored a goal and had two assists, while L. Carpiette had a goal and an assist. Janaya Perry and Amaris Oliver each scored a goal while Morgan Harrell had an assist.

Aces’ goalkeeper Ava Bunch had three saves on three shots on goal. She also had a save on a penalty kick.
