The 2024 Summer Reading Program is in full swing at the Shepard-Pruden Memorial Library.

This past week, we saw the Gary Shelton Magic Show, explored pirate treasure with an escape room, and had some popcorn while watching a film about an Italian-American plumber!

This is only the start of this year’s summer reading program, and we have much in store for all ages to enjoy. This year’s theme is “Adventure Begins at Your Library,” where camping, adventure, travel, and fantastic journeys take center stage.

This week continues this theme as Sylvan Heights will visit the library and the migration of birds will be the topic of discussion on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. This event is open to all ages.

On Wednesday at 11 a.m., we will be hosting two events. First, Ms. Lee Lolkema will start off the Summer Reading Program Storytime by inviting attendees to bring their favorite stuffed animal for a “Reading with Teddy Bear” session. Open to children ages 5 and younger, we will explore how you can read with your favorite plush friend.

At the same time, we invite children ages 6-12 to join us on a journey through time. Teaming up with the Edenton Historical Commission, Ms. Frizzle from the Magic School Bus will take over the Edenton trolley and take participants to the age of the American Revolution. Celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Edenton Tea Party, participants will meet signers of the 1774 Edenton Resolves who protested British taxation and boycotted British goods.

On Thursday, June 27, at 1:30 p.m., teens ages 12-18 are invited to attend a Plant Pot Painting program. Design your own cool pot while planning for your next great garden plant. Attendees to this event must register beforehand, as supplies are limited.

On Friday, June 28, at 2 p.m., the library will host its Family Film Matinee, where you can enjoy a great family-fun movie while feasting on freshly popped popcorn. This week’s showing is based on the Hans Christian Andersen story where a mermaid falls in love with a human prince.

Finally, on Saturday, June 29, at 11 a.m., is the start of the Brunch with the Author speaker series where we meet local children’s book authors over a light brunch. Kicking off the series is author Kim Saunders, who will discuss her latest book, “Friends Forever.” Open to all ages, Saunders will read her book to our youngest patrons while discussing what it takes to write a children’s book. Attendees will be treated to light brunch refreshments during the event.

There will also be an opportunity to purchase a copy of “Friends Forever” signed by the author.

This is only the start of the Summer Reading Program. With seven weeks of events ahead, we hope you can join us to celebrate the joy of reading and the summer season.

If you have any questions, please feel free to stop by the circulation desk or give us a call at 252-482-4112. Check out below the latest additions to the library’s collection. Have a great week, and we hope to see you at the library!
