    James Edward "Jimmy" Yates, 93, of 112 Barker Street, died Wednesday, June 12, 2024, in The Lodge of Rocky Mount. Mr. Yates was born in Beulah, Virginia on October 25, 1930, and was the son of the late Julius Alfred Yates and Mildred Proctor Yates Zanavich. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy Eason Yates, and their son, James Edward Yates, Jr., and two sisters, Margaret Yates Brickhouse and Shirley Ann Yates Tagmyer. A retired heavy equipment operator with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, he was a faithful member of Macedonia Baptist Church, where he had served as a Deacon, taught Sunday School, and was the church's photographer and cemetery historian. Other areas in which he blessed family and friends was his craftsmanship in stained glass, crocheting, and macrame. An avid deer hunter, other enjoyments included the friendships established in Unanimity Masonic Lodge #7 and through his service in the NC National Guard where he retired as a Sargeant in 1990. Surviving are his daughters, Cynthia Yates Wilson, Gail Yates Carnagua (husband, Rick), and Dianne Yates Bryant (husband, Jeff); four grandchildren, Randall Adam Wilson, Catie Wilson Hartman, Toni Carnagua Beal (husband, Chris), and Dustin R. Kintzele (wife, Leanne); and seven great-grandchildren, Madison Hartman, Chloe, Ellie, Lucy, and Griffin Beal, and Landon and Brendon Kintzele. A graveside service was held Saturday, June 15th, at 11:00 a.m. in Beaver Hill Cemetery and was conducted by the Rev. Stanley Nixon.
