Edenton’s Fourth of July celebration was a rousing success as revelers lined Edenton’s Waterfront Park, the seawall in front of the 1767 Historic Chowan County Courthouse green, and Queen Anne Park to see this year’s fireworks display put on by the Optimists Club.

Then on Saturday, July 6, crowds were treated to a summer concert in the park.

The July 4th event, which cost $30,000, packed the waterfront and created a traffic jam that took nearly an hour to clear when the event was over, even with the efficient help of local law enforcement, who overrode traffic lights to expedite things.

The Optimists also provided entertainment before the fireworks. Food trucks were doing a brisk business, with lines extending 20 to 30 feet.

A video game trailer also was a popular attraction. Bounce houses were erected for the kids, and Adam Evans, whose professional name is DJ Cowboy, played music throughout the event.

On Saturday, July 6, crowds braved the 110-degree heat for a chance to hear live music at Edenton’s Waterfront Park. Performing for the Sounds of Summer concert series were Howell and Caswell Music, a light-rock duo from Nags Head, and the Tidewater Concert Band, a 35-piece orchestra from the Hampton Roads, Virginia, area, that played classical, pop, and march tunes.

Local musician Jim Friends, a member of the orchestra, performed a solo on the euphonium — a tuba-like brass instrument — that drew considerable praise.

Acoustics were exceptional, thanks to the power provided by a solar generator from PreServe Resources, which silently provided current to run the sound system.

Food trucks, a kid’s area, retail vendors, and a beer garden were also available at the Trolley on the Waterfront by the Herringbone Restaurant.

Sounds of Summer is a concert series presented by Destination Downtown Edenton and Visit Edenton. The concert series has one more event planned for Aug. 3 at 2 p.m. The Asheville-based bluegrass super-group Songs from the Road Band is scheduled to perform.
