EDISON, NJ - The township has tabled an ordinance to amend the Amboy Avenue Redevelopment Plan. The ordinance would have reduced the maximum height for new mixed-use buildings. The council voted four to two to table the ordinance at their regular meeting on Wednesday.

The ordinance aimed to reduce the permissible height for mixed-use retail and office buildings. The maximum height would be reduced from forty-five feet/four stories to thirty feet/3.5 stories, according to the proposal.

Members of the council expressed that they were not given enough information about the proposal. Some said they had not been provided the recommendations from the Planning Board and were only made aware of the ordinance the day of the meeting.

“I believe in taking our time and doing it right, it is very important simply because we might not get the political push to do it right,” said Council President Nishith Patel “We need to be presented with plenty more documentation to see how this is actually impacting our ordinance.”

Council Vice President Margot Harris, who voted no to table the ordinance, said she was upset about the decision. She claimed that she had received over two dozen emails from residents on Amboy Avenue who wanted the redevelopment plan amended.

“I think this council is making the perfect the enemy of the good,” Harris said, “I think the residents of Clara Barton are looking for is to get on base.”

The Amboy Avenue Redevelopment Plan was passed in 2016 to revitalize the downtown area by creating mixed-use developments and “create a focal point in the neighborhood.” The plan aimed to promote economic development and meet green sustainability, according to the plan.

The plan offers mixed-use development for retail/office, retail/residential, residential, and office buildings. According to the council, only one of these buildings has been constructed on Amboy Avenue since the plan was adopted in 2016.
