The development is named in honor of the legendary Junius George Groves, a prominent figure in Kansas history. Groves was born into slavery in Kentucky in 1859. He moved to the present-day Edwardsville area in 1878 as an Exoduster, the name given to African Americans who were part of the first major migration to Kansas from states situated along the Mississippi River.
Groves became known as “The Potato King of the World” for his wildly successful and innovative potato growth methods that eventually led him to become one of the wealthiest black Americans of the 19th and early 20th centuries. His agricultural empire and the land around it laid the foundation for what was called the community of Groves Center.
