<body><div><figure><img src="https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?type=thumbnail_580x000&amp;url=0FABcx_0inovyXV00" alt="https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=0FABcx_0inovyXV00" width="1320" height="743" ></figure><p>EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — Magic Johnson gave an inspirational speech to some El Paso high school students Wednesday. </p><p>The former NBA player spoke to about 400 student-athletes at Andress High School. </p><blockquote><p>I had so much fun talking to them about preparation, discipline, focus, how to take their game to another level, and last but not least, being excellent in the classroom, Johnson tweeted.</p></blockquote><p>The student-athletes, who were on hand as part of an event organized by El Paso ISD and Cigna, were unaware of Johnson’s visit.</p><p>The legendary NBA superstar focused on education’s role in helping him overcome the challenges in his life and how the same commitment players put into athletics can help them with their academics.</p><p>"I know at that age, all I cared about was playing basketball and making sure I got good grades," Johnson said. "You have the best season, for yourself, for your teammates and coach and high school."</p><p>Johnson received a standing ovation.</p><p>"I honestly had no idea what was going on, but it was a surprise that the coaches had for us and it was a great surprise," Maryfer Carrera, a Franklin High School junior, said. "Everyone is a big fan of him. We watch him, his Youtube videos, I cried a little.
