EL PASO, Texas ( KTSM ) — An El Paso man has died after he was electrocuted in a jacuzzi Tuesday evening, June 11, at a private resort in Puerto Peñasco, according to the General Prosecutor’s Office of Justice for the State of Sonora.
The General Prosecutor’s Office for the State of Sonora says Jorge Guillen, 43, and his wife, Lizzette Zambrano, 35, were in a jacuzzi just after 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 11, at Sonoran Sea Resort in Puerto Peñasco.
The General Prosecutor’s Office says Guillen was electrocuted and Zambrano suffered life-threatening injuries from a possible failure in the wiring.
Zambrano was transferred to an area hospital and was told that she had burns that were consistent with electric shock, according to the General Prosecutor’s Office.
Zambrano was then transported to the United States, where she is currently in critical condition.
The General Prosecutor’s Office says a witness familiar with the couple said she noticed the couple was in the jacuzzi and were not moving.
The witness told agents at the scene that she tried to enter the jacuzzi after the couple was non-responsive. However, as she tried to enter the jacuzzi, she was shocked. The witness then called for help.
La Fiscalía General de Justicia del Estado de Sonora (FGJES) is currently investigating the incident.
The Western Technical College in El Paso has responded to the incident, saying that Guillen was a refrigeration/HVAC evening student and was set to graduate this Friday, June 14.
Guillen was formerly employed as a detention officer at the Otero County Processing Center from 2011 to 2018.
“We are saddened to hear of the loss of Mr. Guillen, who was a great employee and friend. We offer our condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time,” the processing center said.
Zambrano worked as a teacher at East Point Elementary School until 2022, according to the Ysleta Independent School District.
