Rain could damper outdoor festivities this Independence Day, as storms are expected to move into El Paso on the Fourth of July.

The area is expected to see a 20% to 40% chance of heavy rainfall with possible flooding from Tuesday, July 2, to Thursday, July 4, according to the National Weather Service.

This monsoon season, moisture is much higher than average for this time of year, bringing daily showers and heightening the risk of flash flooding.

While monsoon showers are expected to be active on the holiday, there is some good news — storms should move out just in time for evening fireworks, National Weather Service meteorologist Jason Laney said. He expects about a 40% coverage of storms across the Borderland on Thursday, July 4.

“I’m optimistic that most folks may be able to enjoy the Fourth,” Laney said, “but they just may have to cover up for a little bit.”

In a typical monsoon pattern, storms begin midday, brewing in the mountains before heading into lower areas in the afternoon.

The same is likely to happen on the Fourth, possibly impacting parades, picnics and other holiday events during the day.

Firework shows should still go on as planned since monsoon thunderstorms usually play themselves out by the time the sun sets, Laney said.
