4th of July fireworks: Tips for keeping pets safe, calm during July 4th fireworks

Every Fourth of July, some beloved pet dogs get scared by the holiday's popping sounds and unfamiliar noises and run out of their owners' yards.

More than 60% of dogs experience heightened anxiety during fireworks displays, which can lead to frantic behaviors and stress-induced health issues, according to Puppies.com.

"Every year we hear from so many of our customers about how they had to go searching for their pets after the Fourth of July. I feel for them because I know how much a dog or cat can mean to a family. I want to make sure everyone can enjoy the holiday and their summer with their pets," said Pet's Barn President Dean Travis in an email.

That is why Pet's Barn stores in El Paso and San Antonio make it a tradition to offer a solution — calming chews for pets.

"We have made our Activa Calming Functional Dog Chew Fourth of July giveaway somewhat of an annual tradition at Pet's Barn. The free chews given to all of our customers are one way we try to help the El Paso and San Antonio communities enjoy their summer," Travis said.

The chews are infused with all-natural soothing ingredients like chamomile, Tryptophan and vitamin B1, which help relax dogs safely. Pet's Barn is also providing free Red, White and Blueberry Activa Gourmet Dog Biscuits while supplies last.

Pet owners can find them at all 22 El Paso and San Antonio locations.

Tips to keep pets safe during 4th of July

    • Make sure your pet's IDs are legible and have current contact information. Add a tape with your phone number on it.
    • If your pet is chipped, ensure the contact information on the chip is current.
    • Properly secure your doors and windows if you leave or stay at home for the holiday. Set up a quiet, comfortable area inside your home where your pets can retreat during the loud celebrations. Use things like blankets, toys, and soothing music to reduce anxiety.
    • Another thing you can get for your dogs is an anxiety blanket. The sensation of the weighted blanket can provide a distraction from the loud noises and flashing lights of fireworks, helping to shift the dog's focus away from the source of their anxiety.
    • If your pets spend time outside, make sure they can find comfort from the heat or loud noises.
    • Leverage social media to help locate a lost dog or cat.
