EL PASO, Texas ( KTSM ) — A total of 12 people were taken into custody on Sunday, July 14, after a rollover crash in El Paso’s Upper Valley, according to U.S. Border Patrol (USBP).

1 person seriously hurt in rollover in Upper Valley

USBP says just after 5 p.m. that Sunday, agents from Santa Teresa identified a “human smuggling event” near Mount Cristo Rey.

A suspect vehicle that left the area was then located by the Texas Department of Public Safety after a rollover crash near the intersection of Emory and Sunset, according to Border Patrol.

USBP says agents arrived and apprehended several people who attempted to flee on foot and a total of 12 people were taken into custody.

Agents also provided medical assistance to those who were injured before EMS arrived.

El Paso Fire Dispatch also said that one person needed to be extricated from the vehicle that rolled over and was transported Code 3 (serious injuries). Dispatch also said that the crash happened after a pursuit involving law enforcement, but did not know which agencies were involved.

Our crew on the scene reported seeing El Paso Police, Border Patrol and DPS units at the crash site.

“This incident again illustrates how Transnational Criminal Organizations will often force migrants into dangerous situations without any regard for their safety or lives. It also demonstrates how Border Patrol agents and law enforcement partners work closely together to protect the community and save lives,” USBP said.

The incident is under investigation by the CBP Office of Professional Responsibility.
