EL PASO, Texas ( KTSM ) — A man who is accused of shooting and killing his father on July 4th at Red Sands was involved in a large fight that night and his father was shot while trying to get involved in helping his son, according to court documents obtained by KTSM.

Jair Navarro, 21, was arrested on Friday, July 12 by U.S. marshals in the shooting death of his father, 39-year-old Arturo Navarro, according to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office. Arturo Navarro died on July 7 from a gunshot wound to the head, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Video obtained by Sheriff’s deputies showed a large fight going on shortly before midnight at the popular off-road recreational vehicle site in East El Paso County.

The victim was seen on video attempting to pull the suspect, later identified as his son Jair Navarro, away from the altercation.

Later, the suspect is seen in the video getting punched by an unknown male subject, according to court documents.

The suspect is then seen pointing a handgun in the direction of the male who punched him, according to court documents.

The victim is then seen lunging at the male who punched the suspect, his son. At this point, the victim is between the suspect and the unknown male, according to court documents. The victim is then seen falling to the ground and trying to get up.

A muzzle flash was seen on the video coming from the suspect’s gun, according to court documents.

One of the first people on the scene, a volunteer with Texas Rescue Patrol, contacted several witnesses who pointed out the people involved in the shooting. The Texas Rescue Patrol volunteer tried to make contact but the individuals got into a vehicle.

The individuals ignored the Texas Rescue Patrol volunteer’s commands and sped off, according to court documents. The volunteer had drawn his weapon but his commands were ignored, according to court documents.

Marked Sheriff’s Office vehicles also attempted to stop the vehicle, according to court documents.

The fleeing vehicle lost its pursuit in the desert but the vehicle was later discovered when a homeowner called police to report a vehicle on their property that did not belong to them.

Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit used video, witness statements and social media posts to track down the suspect. One of the suspect’s relatives also identified Jair Navarro to law enforcement when shown a still photo taken off the video from the night of the shooting.
