El Paso’s Horses Unlimited seeks for volunteers

EL PASO, Texas ( KTSM ) — Horses Unlimited, a nonprofit organization that helps rescue horses and provides equine therapy services in El Paso is seeking volunteers.
Horses Unlimited Barn Manager Victoria Davis says the organization is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that was created in 2011 to help animal welfare and has since then provided rehabilitation to horses and other animals that were surrendered, abandoned, or abused.
“I think the El Paso community strongly needed Horses Unlimited because beforehand people were putting down horses and tieing them up in the middle of the desert. 2011 would be our hardest year working with horses where there was just lots of different cases of just abandonment and I feel that this is needed for El Paso because it offers a place for people to go and surrender their horses without feeling like the best option is to let them lose,” Davis said.
Davis says 95 percent of their volunteers are from Fort Bliss and once they leave it takes a while to build back a good amount of their volunteers.
“Volunteers are very important for horses so that way we can get a lot done throughout the day. The more volunteers that come, we can be able to clean stalls and exercise horses and brush horses and I feel like the more volunteers we have the more we’re able to do for the horses each day,” Davis said.
Davis says the organization currently has 25 horses, but with animal welfare, they can carry up to 40 horses.
The organization also helps educate the community on horse care and nutrition. Davis says that people who adopt horses will call the organization with any issues or questions they may have.
Davis says she has a bachelor’s degree in equine science.
Horses Unlimited also provides equine therapy, trail rides, horseback riding lessons, adoptions, and other services. Aside from horses, the organization also has donkeys, goats, lamb, peacocks, chickens and roosters.
The organization also holds camps during the summer and allows students to work on their animals to gain experience.
“The PIMA Institute comes and works with our animals so I feel like for them its a good experience for them to get hands on with the chickens and lambs and goats before they start working more in their field,” Davis said.
For those who have questions on horse care, horse nutrition, or need to surrender a horse or for any other related questions, you can contact Horses Unlimited at 915-491-7653 or through email at horsebehaviorist@gmail.com.
