Christina Marenco was a star volleyball player at Burges High School and has been a longtime assistant coach and special education teacher there.

Now, Marenco will continue to serve the Burges HS community as the new head volleyball coach. She will replace the legendary Connie Vaughan, who spent 39 years at the school and won 786 games. Burges competes in Class 5A.

Marenco played middle blocker and outside hitter at Burges, where she graduated in 1993. She then went on to play at UTEP.

"Burges means a great deal to me. I have a passion for this school and the volleyball program," Marenco said. "We have a great winning tradition here at the school. I learned so much from coach Vaughan, and I learned about it while playing and coaching for her."

Marenco also coached her daughter, Savannah, on the Burges volleyball team, and her son, Alec, was a star football player for the Mustangs.

"I'm excited for the updated season," Marenco said. "The kids are working hard and I'm going to work my hardest to help them get better."

Junior hitter Emily Rodriguez is looking forward to Marenco being the new head coach for the Mustangs.

"Coach Marenco coached me on the JV team and she has a passion for the school and community," Rodriguez said. "She is a great coach, and she understands us as players."

Added Burges hitter Rhianna Benford: "As a freshman and first year playing varsity volleyball, coach Marenco's influence and leadership has truly been impactful. Her mentorship and guidance has been instrumental in mine and my teammates growth and she was able to do that as an assistant coach, so I know she will make a profound impact on our athletic journey as the new volleyball head coach at Burges high school."
