    Driver, 90, killed by his runaway SUV in Montwood neighborhood in far East El Paso

    A 90-year-old man died when he was run over by his SUV in the Montwood neighborhood in the far East Side, El Paso police said.

    The man died at the scene and an 81-year-old man attempting to help him was injured in a crash about 8:45 a.m. Sunday, July 21, on Pueblo Lindo Court, a small cul-de-sac off Pueblo Nuevo Circle, police said. The neighborhood is next to Montwood Drive, near Saul Kleinfeld Drive.

    The injured man was transported to a hospital in an undisclosed condition. The names of the men were not immediately released. Both are El Paso residents.

    The 90-year-old man had just reversed a tan-colored 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee off a driveway when he exited the SUV without putting it in park, police said.

    "The driver was struck by the Jeep, which continued to reverse in a counterclockwise manner running over him," a police news release stated. The other man went to try to help the driver and was also struck by the runaway vehicle.

    The driverless Jeep kept going into it went into another driveway and crashed into a utility trailer, police said.

    The fatal crash was investigated by the police Special Traffic Investigations Unit.
