EL PASO, Texas ( KTSM ) – A 90-year-old man is dead, and an 81-year-old man was injured after being struck by a reversing SUV on Sunday, July 21 in East El Paso, El Paso Police said.

EPPD said patrol officers responded to a crash involving a pedestrian call at 8:41 a.m. July 21 at the 11800 block of Pueblo Nuevo. That’s near Montwood Drive and Saul Kleinfeld.

Investigators from the Special Traffic Investigations Unit found that the driver of the SUV, identified only as a 90-year-old elderly man, had reversed the vehicle from a driveway and exited the vehicle without putting it into park.

The driver was then struck and run over by the SUV as it continued to reverse itself, according to EPPD.

EPPD said the pedestrian, identified as an 81-year-old man, went to try to aid the driver and was also struck. The SUV then traveled onto a driveway and struck a utility trailer.

The driver died at the scene and the pedestrian was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Police did not specify the severity of the other man’s injuries.

This crash was the 36th traffic fatality of this year as compared to 43 during the same period last year, according to EPPD.
