Jasper Kiwanis half pot supports Jasper High School Scholarship
Kiwanis President Stu Holland, former Jasper Mayor Bill Schmidt and treasurer Ed Kreilein picked the winner, Kevin Bayer, at Tuesday’s Kiwanis meeting held at the Knights of Columbus. The pot was $1,860 and proceeds will support the scholarships the Jasper Kiwanis awards to Jasper High School students each year. In 2023, the Jasper Kiwanis awarded $3,200 in scholarships.
Monkey rescued from tree at Patoka Lake Campgrounds in southern Indiana
ORANGE COUNTY, Indiana — It's not every day first responders help rescue a monkey from a tree in southern Indiana, but that's exactly what happened Tuesday night. Pioneer Planting at Lincoln Heritage Public Library
The Dale branch of Lincoln Heritage Public Library held a special storytime event July 8 to showcase some of the chores that would have been expected of a young Abe Lincoln. Interns Jaeger Loran and Ethan Bravo of the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial paid a visit in costume, with several pioneer instruments to help set the stage. Those interested in learning more about pioneer life are welcome to visit LBNM’s living historical farm this week, where interns will be hosting activities for all ages between the hours of 10 a.m. to noon.
Ken Shourds Equipment marks 60 years of service
Ken Shourds Equipment marked its 60th anniversary last week, welcoming customers and close friends alike to share memories of this staple of local agriculture. While it’s founder and namesake, Ken Shourds, passed away on March 10, 2011, his family has kept the business growing. His wife, Carol, spent much of last week on the shop floor welcoming guests come to share memories, or customers with an eye toward a new purchase. Today, the couple’s children are taking the lead in keeping the enterprise thriving into its 60th year.
Alabama Man Sentenced to 57 Months for Arson in Indiana, Family Home and Pets Lost in Deliberate Blaze
An Alabama man has been sentenced to nearly five years in federal prison after pleading guilty to arson for setting his father's house on fire in Connersville, Indiana, resulting in the death of the family's dog and cat. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Indiana reported that 34-year-old Tommy Lee Harrison Sr. carried out the attack after traveling from his home in Birmingham, Alabama. Harrison will also face two years of supervised release following his 57-month incarceration.
