Town of Patagonia’s 2024 Primary Election
The Town of Patagonia’s Election Director, Isabel Van Nest is busy gearing up for the 2024 Primary Election. This year the Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, July 30 from 6:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. in the Town Council Chambers at 310 McKeown Ave. You can request an early ballot in writing during Town Hall hours Monday – Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and Friday 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. On this year’s ballot are four candidates running for three council member positions: Ronald Reibslager, Gary Retherford, Michael Stabile and Anita Francesca Claverie. A candidate must receive 51% of votes cast to be immediately elected. Votes cast are the total number of people who voted. Candidates with less than 51% votes cast will have a run-off on November 5th in the general election. Thank you, Patagonia, for coming out and voting.

Arizona's 1st tornado of the year touches down in Tucson
Violent weather is a hallmark of Arizona’s monsoon season. The state had its first tornado of the year touched down late Tuesday evening in Tucson. The National Weather Service confirmed it was an EF-1 tornado, the second-lowest on a five-point scale. The twister was reported around 10:45 p.m., approximately two miles north of Interstate 10, with winds reaching up to 110 miles per hour.
2024 Arizona football season countdown: 58 days to kickoff
A LOOK BACK — NO. 58 IVAN LESNIK. With it being the 58th day until kickoff between the Lobos and Wildcats, the best player to wear No. 58 for Arizona is defensive tackle Ivan Lesnik, who played with the program from 1980-83. Lesnik is one of Arizona’s top scholar-athletes among football players, with 14 career sacks and two Academic All-America awards. Lesnik is now an accomplished anesthesiologist in Seattle. After receiving his M.D. from the University of Arizona College Of Medicine, he completed a residency in anesthesiology before joining the faculty at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego. He then completed several clinical and administrative leadership assignments at overseas military hospitals in Asia and Europe and served as vice chairmen and education director of anesthesiology at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences as well as acting chairmen of the Department of Anesthesiology at National Naval Medical Center during the Iraq and Afghanistan war. He served as specialty leader to the Navy Surgeon General, providing worldwide management of anesthesiology and pain management services for the Navy and Marine Corps during the height of the conflict. After completion of a pain medicine fellowship, he was assigned as deputy program manager for the Navy Comprehensive Pain Management Program as well as operational lead for Navy and Marine Corps program execution in western United States and the pacific theater. He developed and served as director of Navy Medicine’s first operationalized Functional Restoration Pain Program. He retired from the U.S. Navy and joined the University of Washington as an associate clinical professor and chief of pain services at Harborview Medical Center in September 2014.

Oro Valley at 50 Years
When Oro Valley was incorporated 50 years ago, it was envisioned as a bedroom community, cozy and low-key. The town had about 1,200 residents within 2½ square miles. In 2024, it’s estimated more than 48,000 people reside on 36 square miles of scenic desert generally west of Oracle Road, north of Ina Road and east of I-10.

Roche Anchors Business in Oro Valley
Any conversation about business in Oro Valley must begin with Roche Tissue Diagnostics, according to town community and economic development director Paul Melcher. Roche is Oro Valley’s largest employer with approximately 1,700 people working on its expansive – and expanding – 118-acre Innovation Park campus. Close to 200 more work at Roche’s newer facilities near I-10 in Marana. It is Greater Tucson’s largest bioscience company.
Expanding Employers for the Community

Beyond those big companies, Paul Melcher, the town’s community and economic development director since January 2021, has learned there are “a lot more primary employers than we imagined” in Oro Valley.
