Torrential rains lead to near-average runoff forecast for Missouri River basin
(Omaha) -- Torrential rains in parts of South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, and Minnesota have led to a near-average runoff forecast in 2024 for the Missouri River Basin. That was the message from U.S. Army Corps of Engineer officials during its monthly update Thursday. Since the last monthly update, heavy rainfall led to severe flooding in parts of northwest Iowa and minor to moderate flooding along the downstream Missouri River. For June, corps officials say runoff above Sioux City was 6.6 million acre-feet, or 119% of average and 2.6 million acre-feet higher than the forecast. Thus, Ryan Larsen Corps Engineer Adam Larsen says the 2024 calendar year runoff forecast for the Missouri River Basin above Sioux City has increased to 24.6 million acre-feet, or 96% of average.

Norfolk man arrested on weapons charge, shoplifting
On Saturday afternoon, a Norfolk Police officer took a shoplifting report from a business in the 800 block of South 13th Street. According to Capt. Mike Bauer, a knife, with a five-inch blade, was stolen from the store earlier in the day and a manager showed the officer surveillance video of the suspect. The officer recognized him as Jacob Herrmann, age 38, of Norfolk.
One more Heat Advisory on Monday before relief starts on Tuesday
HASTINGS — The Tri-Cities will have to endure one more Heat Advisory today before cooler temperatures start on Tuesday and will linger through the weekend. A Heat Advisory remains in effects for all counties along and south of Interstate 80, including Merrick and Polk counties through 8 p.m. Heat index values are expected to be as high as 110 degrees in certain areas, according to the National Weather Service – Hastings.
Columbus Junior Reds Are 2-1, Still Alive in State Tourney
The Columbus Owens Wealth Advisors Junior Reds are 2-1 and still alive in their reserves league state tournament in Elkhorn. On Friday, the Junior Reds opened with a 2-1 win over the Millard Sox Reserve Black. Columbus scored six runs in the top of the first inning on Saturday en route to a 7-2 victory over Standing Bear.
Nebraska adds Jamar Mozee as Senior Football Assistant
Nebraska football and head coach Matt Rhule made another addition to the coaching staff. Jamar Mozee joins the Huskers as a Senior Football Assistant. Mozee joins the Cornhuskers after spending the last nine seasons as the head coach of Lee’s Summit North High School. He left the program in February for an analyst role with Central Florida. While at Lee’s Summit North, he had an overall record of 64-35 but has gone 33-5 in the last three seasons. His son, Isaiah Mozee, is a four-star recruit in the class of 2025. The younger Mozee committed to Oregon in April but visited the Lincoln campus several times before announcing his decision. Blessed with an amazing opportunity.
