Man charged with murder after shooting on U.S. 290 in Elgin

A 34-year-old man was arrested and charged with homicide after Elgin police said he killed another man near downtown Elgin on Tuesday night, the Police Department said on social media.

Police believe Fabian Salas, of Elgin, shot and killed Joseph Stanczyk, also of Elgin, in the 1500 block of U.S. Highway 290, near the intersection of County Line Road, after 7 p.m., the social media post said. Stanczyk died at the scene, police said, before Salas was arrested.

Police did not respond to questions about the victim's age or a motive for the shooting, nor whether it took place inside their vehicles or on the road.

Salas is being held at the Travis County Jail, with his bond amount to be determined, jail records show.
