For the third year in a row, the League of Women Voters Northeastern North Carolina is celebrating International Women’s Day by hosting a wine-tasting event.

The event will again be held at 2 Souls Wine Bar at 512 E. Main St., Elizabeth City, on March 12 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets are already sold out.

The event will feature wines from women owned/operated vineyards. Also, Sandra Krueger, assistant professor of music and the Miles Clark Endowed Chair of Music at College of The Albemarle, will provide remarks. The event will also feature giveaways of door prizes donated by LWVNENC members as well as Elizabeth City businesses.

First held in 1911, International Women’s Day “celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women around the world,” a press release from the LWVNENC states.

The theme for International Women’s Day is “Count Her In: Invest in Women/Accelerate Progress.”

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan organization that encourages “informed and active participation in government” and works to “increase understanding of major public policy issues” and influence public policy through education and advocacy, the release states.

“The evening (March 12) will be a celebration of the power of women to create a more perfect democracy where every person has the desire, the right, the knowledge and the confidence to participate in our democracy and exercise their right to vote,” the release states.
