Jeanette Overman says one of the best parts about being a member of the Elizabeth City Rotary Club is getting to learn about the goings-on in the greater Elizabeth City community.

Each week the club hosts a community leader at its meeting in the Parish House at Christ Episcopal Church who shares what they are doing in the community, Overman says.

Some past presentations have featured information about the Elizabeth City Rowing Club, school nutrition and history of the Yacht Club, says Overman, who recently took over as Elizabeth City Rotary Club president.

“These have been very interesting,” she said. “You learn a lot.”

Each member of the club signs up to get speakers for a month. That way, the responsibility not only gets spread around the club, the speakers selected have different interests and are from different parts of the community.

“I love that about the club,” said Overman.

Overman joined the Elizabeth City Rotary Club in 2022, and served as president-elect last year. Besides hosting interesting speakers, the club offers college scholarships to local high school graduates each year.

“Our club awarded $25,000 in scholarships to local high school graduates last month,” she said.

One of the club’s upcoming activities will be its collection of school supplies this summer. The supplies will then be given to the annual Pasquotank Sheriff’s Office Pack the Patrol Car event in August.

Overman has lived in Elizabeth City since 1988, when her father, who was in the U.S. Navy, moved the family here when she was in the sixth-grade.

Overman would go on to graduate from Northeastern High School. She then attended East Carolina University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

Overman is currently the assistant vice president commercial loan officer at TowneBank in Moyock.

“I have been in banking 27 years,” said Overman. “I love building relationships with people and with businesses to help them succeed financially.”

Besides the Rotary Club, Overman also has served on the Albemarle Family YMCA Advisory Board and the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools Education Foundation board of directors. She also volunteers at Fountain of Life Church.

In her spare time, Overman likes to run; she’s completed one marathon and several half marathons. She also enjoys spending time with her husband, Barry, and their children, Seth, Brooke and Joel.
