Interested in local history? Two events scheduled Saturday at Sycamore Shoals State Park offer some insight into historical events that occurred at Sycamore Shoals State Historical Park. From 10 to 11 a.m., Museum Curator Chad Bogart will lead a special interpretive walk through the park, along portions of the walking path. He will share some of the historical events that took place at Sycamore Shoals and their significance in the formation of Tennessee and America.

Those participating are asked to meet at the picnic area adjacent to the Visitor Center.

Portions of the walk will include ground that may not be flat or solid for people with mobility challenges.

From 2 to 3 p.m., Bogart will give a detailed account of the Siege of Fort Watauga. In the summer of 1776, 300 Cherokee warriors laid siege to the Fort, where 200 settlers had sought refuge. Bogart will share the strategy of the Cherokee and the reasons for the attack, the measures taken by the settlers in their defense and the weaponry used to defend the fort. There will also be a musket firing demonstration.

Bogart will also share some of the incredible stories of the people involved in this very historic occurrence.
