In 1979, the cost of a gallon of gas was $0.86, Sony released the Walkman, and unbeknownst to The Bank of Elk River, it hired a new employee who would eventually become one of its longest-serving workers.

On Feb. 9, Cheryl Dehmer celebrated her 45th work anniversary at The Bank of Elk River.

“I never thought my part-time job as a teller would turn into a fulfilling lifelong career,” Dehmer said. “As a child raised on a dairy farm, my dream was to someday have a career working with animals.”

Dehmer’s career trajectory began during her high school years when she joined the Office Education Association (OEA) Program, which included working half days at the bank. Guided by her teacher, Mr. Hageman through this program, she embarked on a path that led her to become a vital part of The Bank of Elk River’s growth.

Starting as a teller/bookkeeper, Dehmer’s dedication and inquisitive nature led her through various roles, culminating in her current position as senior controller. Over the years, she witnessed a remarkable evolution in banking technology, transitioning from manual processes to the digital age.

“Customers had passbooks for their savings accounts, and they would bring them in for us to update their transactions and interest manually,” Dehmer said. “Now technology just does it all.”

Dehmer’s impact at the bank extends beyond her daily responsibilities. She played a pivotal role in implementing significant initiatives, from introducing the bank’s first ATM to rolling out the bank’s Employee Stock Ownership Program (ESOP). Her involvement in branch expansions and key strategic decisions, along with her commitment to continuous learning, have directly shaped the bank’s success.

With more than 34 years of managerial experience, Dehmer emphasizes the importance of recognizing each team member’s contribution and fostering a positive work culture. Her commitment to teamwork and positive leadership has created a workplace where colleagues thrive and enjoy a healthy work-life balance.

Dehmer’s commitment to excellence has not gone unnoticed. In 2015, she received the Top Women in Finance Award, recognizing her among the top 50 women in Minnesota for her outstanding contributions to the finance sector.

“Cheryl’s bright mind, adaptability, and thoughtful approach to business have made her an invaluable member of our team,” said John Babcock, chairman, CEO, and president at The Bank of Elk River. “I trust Cheryl and know in my bones she has the customers’ and the bank’s best interest at heart in all that she does. She truly is the consummate community banker.”

The Bank of Elk River extends its heartfelt gratitude for Dehmer’s unwavering dedication, leadership, and positive impact. Her legacy continues to shape the institution’s success, and her colleagues look forward to many more years of collaboration and shared achievements.
