The Trot O’ Gold 5K for CAER, held on Saturday March 16, was a huge success, with 274 participants joining in the St. Patrick’s Day themed festivities to support the CAER Food Shelf.

Despite the cooler temps and increasing wind, runners and walkers of all ages donned their festive attire and came together to make a difference in their community.

Organized by CAER Food Shelf and a small group of volunteers that started this annual walk over 10 years ago, the Trot O’ Gold 5K raised over $23,000. The race started and finished at CAER in Elk River, providing participants an opportunity to see what their efforts were supporting.

“It was good to be in the food shelf and see what is available for those in need,” said race participant Nick Knebel. “It means a lot to me that there is a place of support within Elk River that can help you when times get tough.”

Support of the community made the event possible, and dozens of volunteers helped in all facets of the event, from planning to cheering on participants along the route.

CAER has more than 160 active volunteers who help with daily operations as well as events, clocking over 1,200 hours a month on average. This reflects the power of local support for fighting hunger and food insecurity in the area. The planning and execution of this event was led by the Trot O’ Gold 5k Committee volunteers, Karen Stelk, Tracy Redeppening, Tammy Ferrian, Karmen Sands and CAER staff, Executive Director Heather Kliewer and Operations Manager Jessica Ovall.

After the race, many participants headed to Aegir Brewing. As the presenting sponsor of the Trot O’ Gold 5k, Aegir provided beverages and hosted the after-party, where awards were given.

First place female finisher was Mel Gromatka.

First place male finisher was Justin Lindner.

Costume contest winner was CAER’s Lucky Charms – Jennifer and Don Castle, Kayla Asplund, Geoff Douglas, Julie Lucking.

Individual costume winner was Lennon Weigratz with Team O’Barrett.

Top team fundraiser was Pretty Paws based in Elk River.

The Trot O’ Gold 5K not only provided an opportunity for participants to engage in a fun-filled event but also in creating positive change. The funds raised at this event will support the continued work of CAER Food Shelf, which is seeing a record numbers of visits, serving 700 families a month.

“The generosity of our sponsors and donors is a testament to the remarkable spirit of giving in our community,” Kliewer added. “Their contributions make a real difference in the lives of families and individuals that come to CAER Food Shelf.”

March is Minnesota Food Share month, a statewide campaign where organizations, businesses, faith communities, and individuals come together to raise funds and collect food for local food shelves. Traditionally, March is when food shelves’ inventory is at its lowest, making this campaign crucial. CAER is seeking to raise $50,000 and collect 100,000 pounds of food during the month. This hefty goal was set because in 2023, CAER distributed over one million pounds of food, a record high. Donations received during Minnesota Food Share month are matched proportionately with additional funding from GMCC. To donate food or dollars to CAER, visit www.caerfoodshelf.org/donate.
