    Elk River police report: Vehicle smokes on test drive, then starts on fire in driveway; vehicle break-in attempted with screwdriver; and building is burglarized

    Fire broke out in a vehicle after it had been repaired.

    Authorities were called to the car fire in the driveway of a home in the 12300 block of 195th Avenue in Elk River shortly after 5 p.m. March 26.

    Police officers attempted to extinguish the fire with no success. The Elk River Fire Department put out the fire.

    No one was injured.

    The owner of the vehicle said it was just fixed that day and had started smoking on a test drive. The owner then parked the vehicle, where it started on fire. The vehicle was totaled. Siding also appeared to have melted on the home, according to the police report.

    Male reportedly tried to break into vehicle with a screwdriver

    Police responded to a report of a suspicious male allegedly attempting to break into a vehicle with a screwdriver in the 300 block of Evans Avenue in Elk River.

    Three males wearing masks and dark jackets were reported to be in the area shortly before 4 p.m. March 26, according to the police report.

    Police checked the area, but did not locate any suspects. From footprints, it appears that they ran south, the police report stated.

    Building burglarized; tools are stolen

    An unknown suspect or suspects forced entry into a vacant building in the 600 block of Railroad Drive in Elk River that is undergoing remodeling, causing damage to the front door. Three battery-operated hand tools and grinder blades were stolen.

    The burglary was reported to police at 9:58 a.m. March 25.

    Parking citations issued during snow

    Several dozen parking tickets were issued as winter storms swept through Elk River recently.

    There were 48 snow removal parking-city streets citations issued for the storm on Friday, March 22. Another 22 were issued on Monday, March 25, according to Elk River Police Capt. Joe Gacke.

    Driver’s foot slips off brake, hitting gas

    Police were called to the 10500 block of 182nd Avenue in Elk River shortly before midnight March 21 on a report of a vehicle that had gone into the ditch. The person who called believed the driver was possibly impaired.

    An officer arrived and spoke to the driver, a 66-year-old woman, who said she was backing out of a driveway when her foot slipped off the brake, hitting the gas pedal and causing her to accelerate off the road. The officer determined that the driver was not impaired.

    A towing company responded to pull the vehicle out of the ditch.

    Sliding on icy road, vehicle hits light pole

    A 55-year-old Becker man was traveling southwest on Twin Lakes Road in Elk River in snowy and icy conditions when his vehicle began to slide on the ice in the curves of the road. It slid up onto the curb and hit a light pole, causing heavy front end damage to the vehicle. There was minor damage to the light pole. No one was injured.

    The crash was reported shortly before 11 p.m. March 21.

    Woman arrested for physical domestic

    Police arrested a 34-year-old Elk River woman after responding to an address in Elk River for a physical domestic between a male and a female.

    The call came in just after 1 a.m. March 22.

    Trailer lock partially sawed through

    Police were called to 11044 Industrial Circle, Elk River, where a trailer lock attached to a trailer appeared to have been partially sawed through. The incident was reported at approximately 3 p.m. March 21.

    Boy, 16, cited for smoking e-cig

    A 16-year-old Elk River boy was cited after he was seen by school staff smoking an e-cigarette vaporizer during class at Elk River High School.

    The incident was reported to police on March 21.

    Fraudulent checks totaled $22,813

    Welter Construction in Elk River reported that an unknown suspect cashed fraudulent checks totaling $22,813.21. The forgery was reported to police on March 20.

    Building fire is reported at Forterra

    A building fire was reported at Forterra, 1340 Sixth St., Elk River, at approximately 10 a.m. March 20.

    An employee had been in the building a short time before, welding and grinding metal, according to the police report.

    The Elk River Fire Department responded and put out the fire.

    Laptop computer stolen from vehicle

    A vehicle window was broken and a laptop computer was stolen in the 19500 block of Tipton Street in Elk River.

    The theft happened between 3 p.m. March 23 and 10:13 a.m. March 24.

    Woman arrested after call of man being hit

    Police were called to an Elk River home at 9:30 p.m. March 22 on a report of a woman hitting a man. Officers arrived and confirmed that a physical domestic assault had occurred. A 31-year-old Elk River woman was arrested.

    Numerous driving mishaps reported during winter weather

    Road conditions proved challenging to motorists in Elk River on Tuesday, March 26, 26, with a number of traffic crashes reported. They include:

    • 6:53 a.m.: A driver was southbound on Dodge Street attempting to turn west on Elk Hills Drive, when the vehicle slid on the snow-covered road and hit a street sign in the center median. The sign was knocked over. Minor damage to the vehicle; no one was injuired.

    • 7:29 a.m.: A vehicle southbound on Twin Lakes Road was making a right turn onto 181st Avenue when it slid into the median and struck a sign.

    • 8:09 a.m.: A vehicle traveling west on Highway 10 attempted to turn north onto Upland Avenue, but was not able to make the turn and collided into a vehicle stopped at the light. No one was injured.

    • 8:45 a.m. A driver was eastbound on 205th Avenue rounding the corner onto Quincy Street when the vehicle slid off the road and struck a street sign and a green utility box. There was moderate damage to the vehicle; no injuries.

    • 9 a.m.: A caller reported that a vehicle was unable to get up the hill by Main Street and Railroad Drive and was causing a traffic back-up. When police arrived, traffic had cleared.

    • 9:35 a.m.: An officer observed that a vehicle had hit a temporary stop sign at Main Street and Tipton Avenue. The sign was stuck on the front of the vehicle. The officer fixed the sign.

    • 11:14 a.m.: An officer on patrol saw an occupied vehicle stuck in the soccer field parking lot in the 9900 block of 165th Avenue. The officer spoke with the driver and flagged down a passing tow truck, but the driver said he would try to get out on his own.

    • 12:09 p.m.: A hit-and-run incident was reported. An unknown white car hit a mailbox in the 10800 block of Queen Street and was stuck for some time.

    • 1:29 p.m.: Police responded to a report of a vehicle off the road in the 20500 block of Highway 169. No damage or injuries. Police provided traffic control until the vehicle was pulled out by a tow truck.

    • 2:05 p.m.: Police assisted the Minnesota State Patrol with traffic control for a vehicle that was off the road in the 21000 block of Highway 169.

    • 2:13 p.m. A caller advised that she slid off the road and into a ditch in the 13800 block of 192nd Avenue. A towing company removed the truck from the ditch. No injuries were reported.

    • 3:31 p.m.: A property damage crash was reported. A vehicle traveling south on Elk Lake Road near 196th Avenue lost control, struck the curb and rolled over. The vehicle was towed.
