    Elk River police report: Vehicle drives into construction hole at 169-Main; and drone deployed after man flees

    A passerby reported at 5:18 p.m. April 28 that a vehicle had gone off road and crashed in the work zone at Highway 169 and Main Street in Elk River.

    Police arrived and made contact with the driver and passenger. The driver said he got turned around and got stuck. He acknowledged the road closed signs blocking the road and said he did not know what he hit, according to the police report. Police determined that he hit a road closed sign prior to driving down into the hole dug in the work zone. A towing company responded to tow the vehicle out of the mud. The driver, a 79-year-old Ramsey man, was cited for driving around the barricades and signs.

    Drone deployed after suspected thief flees

    A 37-year-old Sauk Rapids man was arrested in an April 25 incident that began after the Sherburne County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a newly stolen vehicle taken from the Zimmerman area.

    According to the Elk River police report, the sheriff’s office located the vehicle and attempted to conduct a stop. The arrested party fled in the vehicle, crashed and fled on foot. The vehicle was located unoccupied. An Elk River police officer responded to the 22600 block of 180th Street in Big Lake to assist the sheriff’s office by deploying an UAS (unmanned aerial system or drone).

    The suspect was located and taken into custody by the Sherburne County Sheriff’s Office. He was found to have multiple felony warrants, the Elk River police report stated.

    Police seize firearms stored behind couch

    Police executed a search warrant and seized firearms on April 24 at a home in Elk River after a Sherburne County Health and Human Services intake report indicated that a father had several firearms stored behind a couch and accessible to children.

    The investigation into this incident continues, but officers have taken custody of the firearms that were negligently stored, according to Elk River Police Capt. Joe Gacke.

    Girl falls from a second-story window

    Paramedics and police responded to the 20000 block of Polk Street in Elk River on April 24 after a girl reportedly fell out of a second-story window.

    Officers and paramedics rendered aid to the child; Air Care responded and transported the patient to Children’s Hospital, according to the police report. Gacke said the girl was just under 2 years of age. As of April 26, the child was said to be doing well and was anticipated to be released from the hospital soon, he said.

    Vehicle window broken, wallet stolen

    A man reported that someone broke the driver’s door window on his work truck, entered it and stole his wallet. The theft happened in the 10900 block of 181st Lane in Elk River and was reported to police at 9:45 a.m. April 27.

    Stolen playground pieces found nearby

    Pieces of playground equipment, including a swing and a ladder, were reported stolen in the 1800 block of Meadowvale Road in Elk River on April 25.

    Police had a description of the suspect vehicle, and the vehicle and the stolen items were found in a nearby yard, according to the police report. A 37-year-old Elk River woman was cited for theft.

    Man swears, calls names, tries to fight

    A 54-year-old Elk River man was cited after an incident in Elk River on April 25.

    Police were initially called to the 19300 block of Vernon Street for a two-vehicle accident, but when an officer arrived he found that the accident did not occur. Rather, a person had backed out of a driveway in front of another driver, who stopped his vehicle. The person “initially approached the victim to apologize; however, they started swearing, calling the victim names, tried to get the victim to go in the backyard and fight, and would not leave the victim alone,” according to the police report.

    The man was cited for disorderly conduct.
