Flurry of filings come in for Elk River City Council Ward 3

Council Member Mike Beyer will run unopposed for his second term as Ward 2 representative

Elk River Ward 3 City Council Member Mike Beyer, who filed for reelection on Friday, May 24, will be running unopposed.

Meanwhile, three people filed to seek to fill the position being vacated by Ward 2 Council Member Matt Westgaard. There was a flurry of filings for Westgaard’s seat in the last two days of the filing period that closed at the end of the business day on Tuesday, June 4.

The candidate filing period for the Ward 2 and Ward 3 seats opened Tuesday, May 21.

The first to throw their hat in the ring was Dornan Bland, who filed on Monday, June 3.

Two more people filed on the last day of the two-week window. They were J. Brian Calva and Mike Niziolek.

Candidates had until June 6 to withdraw their candidacy, Bland withdrew his candidacy on that final day. With three candidates, there would have been a primary on Aug. 13, but with Bland’s withdrawal the need for that has vanished.

Westgaard announced earlier this year he was not seeking reelection. Beyer announced his plans to run for a second term several weeks ago.
