Riverfront Concert Series to feature theme nights in 2024

The 2023 Riverfront Concert Series finished on a high note when the Fabulous Armadillos rocked a packed Rivers Edge Commons Park on a beautiful August night.

This year, organizers of the city of Elk River’s Riverfront Concert Series — with the help of its signature sponsor, The Bank of Elk River — hoped to make each one of concerts feel like the last one in 2023.

Junk-FM will perform at the first show at 7 p.m. on June 13, with a Kickoff to Summer theme as the band plays Top 40 Hits from the ‘80s, ‘90s and 2000s.

A decision was made over the winter to cut the number of concerts down six, spend more money on each band to pack a powerful lineup, and try to create the excitement that the Fabulous Armadillos brought to the park overlooking the Mississippi River in Downtown Elk River.

This year, the city is introducing themed nights.

“We want each show to be more of an event and not just a free show,” said Starr Sorheim, the senior communications coordinator for the city of Elk River. “We encourage you to come dressed for the theme and ready for bigger and better shows.”

Thanks to The Bank of Elk River inking another three-year contract with the city, the concerts will remain free for the community.

The city has lined up Junk FM (theme: Kickoff to Summer), World According to Garth (Country Western Party), Wicked Garden (‘90s Grunge Night), Free and Easy Band (‘70s Funk Night), Fabulous Armadillos (All American Night), and Arch Allies (Light Up the Night ‘80s Style.)

The concerts will fall on June 13 and 27, July 11 and 25 as well as Aug. 1 and 15.

The ISD 728 Cadets will open for World According to Garth.

If inclement weather is expected on the evening of a scheduled concert, city of Elk River staff will make the final decision regarding moving indoors by 1 p.m. that day. The location change will be posted on the city’s webpage, the website homepage, and on its social media accounts.

Sorheim expressed thankfulness to The Bank of Elk River for continuing to be the signature sponsor as it has been since 2008 and providing giveaways each show.

The Bank of Elk River has donated well over $200,000, providing for more than 100 free concerts over the years.
