Five semi-trucks ‘fully engulfed’ in flames at GATR Truck Center
Fire chief says that the fire is still under investigation by Joni Astrup Associate Editor A fire involving semi-trucks was reported just after midnight Sunday, Feb. 11, at GATR Truck Center in Elk River. When police officers arrived, they found five semi-trucks “fully engulfed,” according to the police report. The trucks were parked in the rear parking lot of the business at 10743 168th Ave. The Elk River Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire. Fire Chief Mark Dickinson said Tuesday that the fire is still under investigation.
16th Northwestern High School Art Show returns to NHCC
Show features art from 11 schools, including Elk River, Zimmerman, Rogers Through Feb. 26, North Hennepin Community College is hosting its 16th annual Northwestern High School Art Show in which artists from local high schools will be featured in the college’s Fine Arts Department’s Joseph Gazzuolo Fine Arts Gallery. The show is curated by Leslie McDougall. The Joseph Gazzuolo Fine Arts Gallery is open for viewing 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. Elk River City Council makes appointments to city commissions
Appointments were made to several Elk River city commissions by the Elk River City Council on Feb. 5. They are as follows. • Energy City Commission: Reappointed Barbara Burandt and Matthew Fomby as residential representatives and Anthony Miller as energy-related business representative. • Heritage Preservation Commission: Reappointed Zachary Griffiths. • Multipurpose Facility Advisory Commission: Reappointed Jim Hecker as senior center representative; appointed Tonya Henderson as an at-large representative and Jacob Kotzian and Michael Zeman as turf representatives. • Parks and Recreation Commission: Reappointed Dave Anderson. • Planning Commission: Reappointed Tony Mauren and Robert Rydberg. • Utilities Commission: Reappointed Paul Bell.
Sherburne County awards bid for CSAH 28 road project in Baldwin Township
A bid has been awarded for a road project in northeastern Sherburne County. On Feb. 6, the Sherburne County Board of Commissioners approved the lowest responsive bidder, Knife River Corporation—North Central, for the reconstruction of County State Aid Highway 28 from County State Aid Highway 19 to the east county line in Baldwin Township. Knife River’s bid was $1,135,465, the lowest of 13 bids submitted. High bid was $1,770,790. Project construction dates will be contracted from Feb. 26, 2024, through Aug. 11, 2024, according to a county memo.
Felber appointed to state energy transition committee

The appointment was made by Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development Commissioner Matt Varilek. Felber’s term runs through Jan. 3, 2028. ...
New police officer hired in Rogers
The Rogers City Council has approved the hiring of Avery Fischer as a full-time police officer. His hiring brings the Rogers Police Department’s sworn staffing level to 23 officers. The department’s sworn staffing level is 24 officers. Fischer was a member of the Maple Grove Police Department’s Police Explorer program and then was a community service officer in Maple Grove. He was hired as a part-time community service officer in Rogers in July 2023. Fischer graduated from Hennepin Technical College in December 2023.

Gate City promotes Alison Blake
Alison Blake has been promoted to assistant vice president, universal lender at Gate City Bank. She is at the bank’s Coborn’s location in Elk River. Blake joined the bank in March 2018. Originally from Big Lake, Blake earned her marketing degree from North Dakota State University, as well as her professional selling certification. Blake lives in Elk River. Outside of work, she enjoys volunteering with Thumbs Up and You’re Not Alone, and is involved in multiple networking groups and mental-health-awareness initiatives. In her free time, she loves giving back in the community, going on walks, working out, shopping, reading and participating in Bible studies. Sherburne County Board OKs 10 lots in Big Lake Township
Meadow Estates South, consisting of 10 residential lots on 37 acres in Big Lake Township, was approved by the Sherburne County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 6. The site is located off County Road 83 by the future 174th Street. The plat was proposed by Ziegler Custom Homes, in Elk River.
Tax preparation services offered
Tri-CAP will be offering free tax preparation services at the Sherburne County Government Center in Elk River. There are some restrictions on who qualifies for the service. Volunteers will be available on Wednesdays beginning Feb. 14. For more information and to schedule an appointment online, go to https://tricap.org/assistance/taxes/. Zimmerman will get another patrol deputy
The Sherburne County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 6 approved the addition of one patrol deputy position to the sheriff’s office staffing complement to provide contracted law enforcement services to the city of Zimmerman. In December, the Zimmerman City Council had approved adding another deputy position to the public safety contract between the city and the Sherburne County Sheriff’s Office. There is no budget impact on the county because the city of Zimmerman pays for the position and future wage increases, according to a county memo.
Two vehicles collide at Highway 10, 171st
One person was injured in a two-vehicle crash Sunday morning, Feb. 4, in Elk River. A Ford F150 driven by Stanley Capehart, 66, of Otsego, was eastbound on Highway 10 and a Kia Optima driven by Madelyn Cramer, 22, Elk River, was northbound on 171st Avenue when the two vehicles collided in the intersection, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. Cramer sustained injuries the State Patrol described as non-life-threatening. Capehart was not injured. Both drivers were wearing seat belts and alcohol was not involved, the State Patrol reported. The crash was reported at 10:49 a.m.
