The eyes of the world are on Iowa as deep in the throes of the Cold War, Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev makes a visit to tour its farms, claiming his nation will soon rival the state in corn production. The Register's sister afternoon paper, the Des Moines Tribune, reports on his Sept. 22, 1959, arrival at the Des Moines airport to visit his friend, seed entrepreneur Roswell Garst, in Coon Rapids. The excursion follows a Pulitzer-winning 1956 editorial by the Register's Lauren K. Soth inviting a Soviet delegation to come to Iowa to study its agriculture.
Van Meter man allegedly resists arrest Monday by kicking cop
A Van Meter man did not go peacefully Monday when he was arrested on a Dallas County warrant by officers of the Van Meter Police Department. Luke Miller Jennings, 44, of 204 Second Ave., Van Meter, was arrested on a warrant for probation violation on an original charge of assault while displaying a dangerous weapon and was also charged with third-degree harassment, interference with official acts and disorderly conduct.

Iowa Town Didn’t Get Warning Sirens Ahead of Damaging Tornado
Weather sirens are supposed to warn communities when a tornado is near. But sometimes severe storms form too quickly for them to be used effectively. Residents of an Iowa town learned the hard way this week that the outdoor sirens are not perfect. The National Weather Service's Des Moines office confirmed to the Des Moines Register that it did not issue a tornado warning until five minutes AFTER the twister had touched down in the city of Urbandale.
