ELKHART, Ind. (WISH) The National Weather Service has confirmed at least three tornadoes hit northern Indiana early Tuesday morning including one that traveled through residential areas in Elkhart.

    • A weak tornado hit Crown Point. The weather service officer in Chicago had not provided details by late Tuesday afternoon.
    • A weak tornado with peak gusts of 75 mph dropped about 12:09 a.m. Tuesday southwest of the rural Marshall County intersection of 19th Road and Birch Road. That’s about 2 miles northwest of Mentone. It traveled about three-quarters of a mile before lifting in a grove of trees. The twister uprooted or snapped trees in the area, the weather service office for northern Indiana reported.
    • A weak tornado with maximum gusts of 90 mph dropped at 12:21 a.m. Tuesday near Hawthorne Elementary School. The tornado traveled about 1.9 miles through residential neighborhoods. It lifted near the intersection of Bismark Avenue and South Main Street. Its maximum width was 250 yards. Numerous trees were uprooted, the weather service office for northern Indiana reported. “The greatest damage occurred in the area of Mather Ave, between Carlton Ave and Naomi St.,” the weather service wrote.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office says Laura Nagel, 44, died after a tree fell on the master bedroom of her home in the northwest Indiana town of Cedar Lake on Monday night. Her husband and daughter, who were at home during the storm, were not hurt. Town officials say the house was destroyed.

Also, Indiana State Parks on Tuesday announced the hiking and horse trails at Tippecanoe River State Park has been closed indefinitely due to multiple downed trees. The River Tent Camp also is temporarily closed. The park is about 2 miles north of the Pulaski County town of Winamac, or about a 70-minute drive southwest of the city of South Bend.
