BOONVILLE — One big run propelled Starmount’s boys basketball team to a 56-44 win against Elkin last Tuesday night.

In a game that featured nine ties and 14 lead changes through three quarters, the Rams and Buckin’ Elks were tied 35-35 going into the fourth quarter.

But after Elkin’s Tyler Jenkins tied the game 39-39 — the 11th tie of the game — one intentional foul on the Buckin’ Elks turned the tide with 5:21 to play.

Colton Allen, who led Starmount (8-13, 3-7Northwest 1A Conference) with a game-high 28 points, hit 1-of-2 from the free-throw line to take the lead. The junior then knocked down a jumper to push the lead to three.

Gavin Ward made it a one-possession game with 1-of-2 from the charity stripe; on the next possession, Jadon Hurt-Bailey made a pass to Luke Collins that appeared to be high and going out of bounds.

In a split decision, the junior tipped the ball to Allen, who made the basket as part of a 15-1 run that extended the lead to double figures (52-40) with just over three minutes to play.

While Allen had the big fourth quarter (with 15 of the Rams’ 21 points), Lorne Edwards had the hot hand early on for the Buckin’ Elks.

The freshman paced Elkin (4-16, 0-9) with 13 points, which included a trio of 3-pointers. The Buckin’ Elks built their lead to as many as nine in the first quarter on a pull-up jumper from Jenkins.

Elkin led 15-9 after one, but the lead changed hands six times the remainder of the half and the visitors held a one-point halftime lead at 23-22.

Both teams struggled out of the break as only one field goal — a runner from Edwards — was made in nearly the first five minutes of the third quarter.

In addition to Allen, Collins added 20 points for the Rams, who dropped games to Alleghany (57-49) and at South Stokes (70-37) on Wednesday and Friday, respectively.

Charlie Pelkey joined Edwards in double figures for Elkin with 11 points; Ward and Jenkins finished with eight and six points, respectively.

The Buckin’ Elks, who traveled to Mount Airy on Tuesday, also dropped a 52-38 decision at Alleghany this past Friday.
