It was news out of Elkin of an automobile accident last Monday morning that took some members of the Surry County Board of Commissioners and those in attendance to their Monday evening meeting by surprise.

New Elkin City Schools Superintendent Dr. Steven Hall and his wife BriAnne were involved in a serious auto accident that required more than just first aid on the scene of the crash. Both are expected to make a full recovery, but Vice Chair Mark Marion asked Commissioner Eddie Harris if he could provide an update on the matter.

“He and his wife were coming down Highway 21 this morning, or course they still live across the mountain, but they were going to work and there was a lady who fell asleep and crossed the center line,” Harris explained.

He further said he had been advised by Elkin City Schools Board member Earl Blackburn that injuries included lacerations and broken bones, “Pretty serious stuff… it was not a minor accident, it was a really serious accident,” Harris explained. He added Monday that he expected them to be transported, if they had not been already, to Winston-Salem for further care.

At the Surry Yadkin Fleet announcement last Monday, Mount Airy City Schools Interim Superintendent Don Martin, a former Elkin City Schools Superintendent himself, said he was told Mrs. Hall had indeed been transferred to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical but Dr. Hall had not.

A photo of Dr. Hall was posted to the Elkin City Schools website last Thursday afternoon with a statement that school district staff “breathed a sigh of relief” to see Hall following the accident.

The post read in part that Hall, “appreciates the respect and privacy shown to his family thus far.” It went on to say, “As well all express concern for Dr. Hall and his wife, and his family’s wellbeing, we are reminded to honor his words ‘family comes first’ by making a special effort to continue to respect their healing process as he and his wife recover. “

Both Halls have a connection to Surry County as Dr. Hall was a graduate of North Surry High and BriAnne graduated from Mount Airy High. They couple have two teenage sons.

Chairman Van Tucker asked everyone to keep Dr. and Mrs. Hall in their prayers and for “their rapid recovery.”

In a strong juxtaposition to the news on Dr. and Mrs. Halls, the Surry County Board of Commissioner recognized members of Surry County Emergency Services Monday night for their lifesaving efforts.

Recognized for having achieved 25 saves were Assistant Supervisor Josh Booker, Crew Chief Tim Crotts, and Supervisor William Wall.

Assistant Supervisor Zach Murphy, Crew Chief Christy Hooker, Crew Chief Dylan Moats, and MIH Paramedic Bubba Killgo were recognized for having 10 saves. Crew Chief Chaz Dickerson was recognized for having five saves.

On social media, Surry County Emergency Services wrote, “Congratulations to each of you and thank you all for your superior care and service to the citizens and visitors of Surry County.”
