With the spring softball season quickly winding down, the Lady Elks of Elkin High School faced off with two conference rivals this week, both on the road. The Lady Elks were able to add two more games to their win column as they easily won both contests.

On Tuesday, April 16, Elkin traveled to Boonville for their second matchup of the season with the Lady Rams of Starmount High School. Senior Lily Robbins was dominant from the mound, as she racked up 14 strikeouts and only surrendered one walk in the Elks’ 7-3 victory.

Elkin jumped out to the lead in the top of the fourth inning after senior Macy Lane grounded out, scoring one run and then senior Leigha Church pounded out a single, bringing home two runners. But a double hit by Starmount tied the game at three-all in the bottom of the fifth inning.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Lady Elks captured the lead for good when senior Maggie Tomlin hit a single, scoring one run. A Starmount error scored a second run and then Lane smacked a home run over center field to score two more runs. Lane led the Elks with three runs batted in. Tomlin went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead her team in hits. The Elks showed patience at the plate, collecting five walks. They also ran wild on the base paths, piling up four stolen bases for the game.

The game against the Lady Rams served as a warm-up for the Lady Elks as they picked up right where they left off after traveling up the mountain to battle with the Trojans of Alleghany High School on Friday, April 19. The Lady Elks dominated the Trojans, taking a 15-0 win.

Macy Lane drove in four runs on two hits to once again lead her team to victory. In the first inning, Lane hit a single, scoring two runs. Lily Robbins was again dominant from the mound, striking out 10 batters on the day while only walking two. The Elks surrendered only three hits and zero runs over only four innings, as the game ended early due to the 15-run lead mercy rule.

The scoring frenzy began for the Elks in the top of the second inning as the Elks scored five runs on three hits. Maggie Tomlin drew a walk, scoring one run. Trojan errors resulted in two more runs for the Elks and then senior Karly Gentry knocked a single, scoring two runs.

The second rally of the game for the Elks occurred in the top of the fourth inning when the Elks scored seven runs on two hits. Gentry singled again, scoring two runs. Freshman Alyssa Jenkins drew a walk, bringing home one runner. Robbins and sophomore Mackenzie White also both drew a walk, scoring one run each and a Trojan error brought home two more runners for the Elks.

Gentry, Lane and Robbins each collected two hits for the Elks. The team also had a strong eye at the plate, as they tallied 13 walks for the game. Tomlin, Robbins, White and Leigha Church collected two bases on balls each. Gentry stole two bases, leading the Elks with nine total bases stolen. The Lady Elks were sure-handed in the field, as they did not commit a single error. Senior Leah White had the most chances in the field with ten.

With only two conference contests to go, Elkin’s conference record increased to 7-3, with an overall record of 11-6. The Lady Elks will host the Bears of Mount Airy on Tuesday, and the Sauras of South Stokes on Friday. Currently, the Lady Elks are in third place, one game behind the Sauras. They will need a win on Tuesday night and again on Friday night, a night that the seniors will be recognized, to move up in the standings. The Elks will also host the Eagles of Surry Central on Wednesday evening in a non-conference matchup.
